As part of our ongoing efforts to offer you more — quality service and convenience — SEMCO offers automated meter reading (AMR) -- state-of-the-art computerized technology that enables gas meters to be read automatically.

AMR technology has been used for more than 40 years, with over 100 million AMR devices in use in the United States. This technology has been proven to read meters with accuracy.

How does AMR technology work?

AMR uses a battery-operated device that is installed on existing gas meters. The battery-operated device then reads gas meters digitally and records the readings using a radio transmitter. AMR technology only reads your meter. It will have no effect on or control over your appliances or your gas usage.

There is no installation charge for AMR technology. Installation typically takes just a few minutes, and there will be no interruption in your gas service. You will not need to be home. However, our technicians will need to get to your meter and will make arrangements with you for access should there be any difficulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who will be doing the AMR installations?
Experienced SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company technicians will install the AMR devices. Those technicians will also continue to perform service or repairs that may be needed to meters.

For your safety, we encourage you to ask for the identification of anyone who comes to your door claiming to need access to your property. Adopt the policy of “no identification — no entry.” If you are ever in doubt about whether a person is a legitimate SEMCO ENERGY service technician, please do not allow them into your home.

Do I need to call to schedule the installation?
No, you do not need to call SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company to schedule installation. However, the technician will need to be able to get to your meter. If the meter cannot be accessed, the technician will first check to see if anyone is present to gain access. If necessary, a tag will be left at your door asking you to call SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company to arrange for access.

Will I need to be present during the installation?
The vast majority of installations do not require anyone to be present.

Will AMR control the gas I use or affect my appliances?
No, AMR only reads your meter. Just like manual meter readings, it has no effect on or control over your appliances or gas usage.

If I read my own meter, how will I know when I no longer need to do that?
SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company customers have the option of reading their own meters and providing those reads for billing. However, the use of AMR technology eliminates the need for you to do so.

Will there still be a dial on my meter?
Yes, your meter will still have a dial so that if, for any reason, we need to read you meter manually, we can do so. You will also be able to look at the dials if you want.

Will AMR change how I pay my bills?
No, AMR will not change any of your payment options. It will have no effect on any payment plan, budget billing, paperless billing, automatic bank draft, or any other payment programs.

Will you ever need to access my meter after AMR is installed?
Yes, even though SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company employees will no longer need access to your meter for meter readings, we will still need access to your meter for maintenance or safety reasons.

Is my personal information safe and secure?
Yes, AMR only sends information about the meter reading, which is securely and confidentially recorded. It does not transmit any other personal or account information about you. No one will be able to intercept any information about your account from the AMR device

Will AMR interfere with my TV, radio or other electronic equipment?
No, AMR is safe and will not interfere with electronic devices, such as televisions, radios, phones, internet, garage door openers, or invisible fences. The FCC-compliant AMR devices use standard radio frequencies that, like the common radio, have been shown to be safe.
